Abstract

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory tract infection in children and adults. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of C. pneumoniae in adults and children admitted to the hospital with acute lower respiratory tract infection. Acute phase serum specimens from 48 patients were examined for antibodies to C. pneumoniae using the microimmunofluorescence test. Antibodies to C. pneumoniae were detected in four (22.2 %) of 18 children and 14 (46.7%) of 30 adults. Serological evidence of acute infection with C. pneumoniae was found in only one (5.6 %) child and four (10%) adults. Results of this study demonstrate that C. pneumoniae has a role in the etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infection in adults and children.
