Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of staphylococci causing systemic infection. The in vitro susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus (45) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) (105) to vancomycin, erythromycin, amikacin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin was determined by disk diffusion and BIOMIC system. The resistance rates to methicillin were 65 % and 57 % in S. aureus and CNS, respectively. Resistance to vancomycin was not detected while higher rates of resistance against erythromycin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin were found in methicillin-resistant isolates. These results should be taken into account for initiating empirical therapy of bacteremia when staphylococci are suspected.
