Abstract

It is known that natural habitats of exogenous human pathogenic fungi affect the epidemiology of their infections. The Sporothrix schenckii strain examined in this study was isolated from the timbers used in the construction of the tomb chamber of Tumulus MM at Gordion (Ankara, 8th century BC) attributed to Midas I, the Frigian King. The isolate was characterized as being thermointolerant and producing dematiaceous (virulent type) conidia along with the hyalen ones. Its recovery from decaying timber in a remarkable location seems to support the ecology of S. schenckii.
