Abstract
The Human Parvovirus B19 (HPVB19) is a virus that can cause, besides "Erythema infectiosum", serious clinical manifestations such as transient aplastic crisis, hereditary hemolytic anemia, Henoch-Shönlein purpura, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemophagocytic syndrome, arthritis and nonimmune fetal hydrops in the growing fetus. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Human Parvovirus B19 (HPVB19) in healthy children under 12 years of age. For this purpose, the sera of 70 healthy children were screened for the virus using Ridascreen Parvovirus B19 IgG/IgM kit in GMMA Haydarpaşa Training Hospital between October 1, 1999, and December 27, 1999. The prevalence of HBVB19 was 11.4 % for IgG and 1.4 % for IgM. These rates are not higher than the rates found in other countries.
