Abstract

The studies on otomycosies, one of the most frequent fungal infections, are very limited. Otomycosis epidemiology in most regions of Turkey is not known. The aim this our study was to determine the Otomycosis epidemiology in Manisa and its environment. For this reason, 433 cases clinically prediagnosed as otomycosis at Celal Bayar University Hospital between February 1995 and June 1999 were investigated. Swabs from outer ear of the patients were studied with mycological methods. Growth occurred in 107 specimens (24.7%) and the direct microscopic examination was positive in 75 specimens out of 107 (70.1%). Molds grew in 86 cases out of 107 (80.3%), yeasts in 20 (18.7%) and dermatophytes in one (1%). The isolated molds were Aspergillus niger (54), Aspergillus fumigatus (19), Penicillium spp. (6), Aspegillus terreus (4) and Aspergillus flavus (3); the isolated yeasts were Candida tropicalis (10), C. albicans (6), C. guilliermondii (2), Torulopsis glabrata (2); and the isolated dermatophyte was Trichophyton mentagrophytes (1). The findings of the study were in general similar to the findings of other studies, molds being the most frequent causes of otomycosis.
