Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine macrolide resistance in Haemophilus influenzae. The in vitro activities of macrolides againts 66 H. influenzae strains isolated and identified from clinical throat swab specimens of 0-6 year -old children who had upper respiratory tract infection were investigated by disk diffusion method. According to the recommendations of NCCLS, Haemophilus Test Medium (HTM) was used in this study and 50% of strains were found to be resistant to clarithromycin and 4.5% to azithromycin. There was no susceptible strain to erythromycin. The susceptibilities to macrolides, susceptibility criteria and interpretations of those were evaluated. As a result, azithromycin can be prefered as representative agent of macrolides in the treatment of H. influenzae infections if supported by in vivo studies.
