Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of dermatophytoses and their agents in the incidence of dermatophytoses and their agents in Şanlıurfa, a south-east city in Turkey. The clinical specimens (skin, scalp and nail) of 412 patients with pre-diagnosis of dermatomycosis, were examined by mycologic methods in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Harran University Hospital. Direct microscopic examination revealed positive result for fungi in 192 (46.6 %) patients and among these in 164 (85.4 %) cultures were positive. Dermatophytes were isolated in 139 (84.8 %) of these 164. The distribution of dermatophytes wereas follows: 91 (65.5 %) Trichophyton rubrum, 21 (15.1 %) Microsporum canis, 12 (8.7 %) T. mentagrophytes, 6 (4.3 %) T. verrucosum, 6 (4.3 %) Epidermophyton floccosum, 2 (1.4 %) T. violaceum and 1 (0.7 %) T. tonsurans. It is concluded that Tinea pedis was the most frewuent dermatophytosis and T. rubrum the most frewuent dermatophyte in the region.
