Investigation of Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 in cases with gastroenteritis

Abstract

Verotoxin producing Escherichia coli, particularly serotype O157:H7 has been regarded to be an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in children. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of E. coli 0157:H7 in child gastroenteritis. The stool samples of 150 children with acute diarrhoea were examined for E. coli O157:H7 serotype. In 6 out of 150 samples (% 4) E. coli 0157:H7 was isolated. It is concluded that although E. coli 0157:H7 serotype is an uncommon cause of acute gastroenteritis, it is an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in children. The bacterium should be investigated in stool samples due to its serious complications.

Verotoksin üreten Escherichia colfnm özellikle O157:H7 serotipi çocuklarda görülen akut ishallerin önemli bir nedeni olarak kabul edilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ishal olgularında E. coli 0157:H7 prevalansını saptamak idi. Çalışmada, akut ishal şikayeti bulunan 150 çocuk hastanın dışkı örnekleri E. coli O157:H7 serotipi yönünden incelendi. Örneklerin altısında (% 4) E. coli O157:H7 serotipi izole edildi. Söz konusu bakteri serotipi akut gastro-enteritlerde çok sık görülmemekle beraber önemli nedenleri arasında yer almaktadır. Ciddi komplikasyonlara yol açabileceğinden akut gastro-enteritli hastaların dışkı örneklerinde E. coli 0157:H7 serotipi araştırılmalıdır.
