Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the hospital infection risk caused by the bacterial contamination of faucets in the hospital that are frequently used by hospital staff, patients and visitors. The swab materials of totally 57 faucets of the rooms of doctors, nurses and patients, of the toilets, of the units of surgery, haemodialysis and sterilization units and of the kitchen were cultured on blood agar and EMB agar. After incubation for 48 hours at 37° C, the bacteria were identified by conventional methods. Bacterial growth was detected in 39 (68.4%) of 57 faucets. The identified bacteria were as follows: Staphylococcus aureus 14 (28.0%), coagulase-negative staphylococci 12 (24.0%), Escherichia coli 8 (16.0%), Enterococcus spp. 6 (12.0%), Klebsiella spp.3 (6.0%), Hafnia spp. 3 (6.0%), Enterobacter spp. 2 (4.0%), Serratia spp. 1 (2.0%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1 (2.0%). The relations between the bacterial growth and the usage frequency of the faucets (p
