A case of nosocominal enterocolitis by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

In this paper, a nosocomial enterocolitis due to a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus which developed during pneumonia therapy in a 83-year-old male patient with gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage is presented. The disease which initiated with severe diarrhea resulted with mortality despite therapy. Gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage, antiulcer therapy and broad spectrum antibiotics were determined as the risk factors for developing S. aureus enterocolitis. Staphylococcus aureus should be considered as one of the causative agents of life-threatening gastroenteritis in risk bearing patients.

Özet

Bu yazıda, gastrointestinal sistem (GİS) kanaması olan 83 yaşındaki bir erkek hastada pnömoni tedavisi sırasında gelişen, metisiline dirençli bir Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) suşunun yol açtığı nozokomiyal bir enterokolit olgusu sunulmuştur. Şiddetli ishal ile başlayan hastalık tedaviye rağmen ölüm ile sonuçlanmıştır. Staphylococcus aureus'a bağlı enterokolitin gelişmesi için risk faktörleri GİS kanaması, anti-ülser tedavi ve geniş spektrumlu antibiyotik kullanımı olarak saptanmıştır. Risk faktörleri taşıyan hastalarda, S. aureus'un hayatı tehdit edici gastro-enterit tablolarına neden olabileceği göz önünde bulundurulmalıdır.
