Abstract
Automobile becomes important first through its transformation of transportation/communication or time and space in the capitalist system. It increasingly reflects the all facets of social analysis in "consumption society", which is cultural structure of the system. Commercials are the vital point of the capitalist system, which stereotypes the commodity value of automobile and sheds symbolic meanings. The spiral of delight, fun, industry and similar profitable plans is displayed in commercials and by extension in car races, which perform multiple functions for commercials, for instance. Formula 1 Races (F1 Races) lead such races. F1 Races displays a development in accordance with the expansion and envelopment rationale of the system with the way of their organization and realization. F1 Races have found both economic and political ground in Turkey, which integrates with the world as a result of neo-liberal policies pursued in the aftermath of 1980 and aspires to become a consumption society in this process. This study is designed to question the organization conditions, various economic and symbolic powers generated, expected utilities of F1 Races in Turkey, which has become a base of automotive industry in the world. This study evaluates the complicated position of automobile in the capitalist system and consumption society, which is the capitalist system's cultural structure. Within this context it also evaluates F1 Races and analyzes Turkey's hosting of these races within a political economic perspective. While this study concludes that the organization of F1 Races in Turkey is not a coincidence taking into account the economic policies and political preferences pursued, that such an expensive race is undertaken with Turkish state's subsidy is evaluated with respect to the expected utilities in many categories.
