Class identity in the face of the cultural identities and representation of the identity of the working-class in media (a case study of tekel workers’ action)

Abstract

The differentiation politics based on cultural identities/diversities have been risen and the importance of citizenship of modern nation-state has been declined in process of globalization. The problematic of this study is weakening of economic and social aspects of citizenship by globalization, the losing of importance of working-class identity in the process of global capitalism, and media’s view of the class identity as the tool of the hegemony of global capitalism. The purpose of this study is to examine the issue of identity which is the important topic in recent years and to debate the representation of working-class identity through the case study of Tekel workers’ action in media.

Özet

Küreselleşme sürecinde kültürel kimliklere/farklılıklara dayalı ayrıştırıcı politikalar ön plana çıkmış ve modern ulus-devletin ekonomik ve toplumsal hakları temel alan yurttaşlık anlayışı geri plana itilmiştir. Küreselleşmenin yurttaşlığın ekonomik ve toplumsal yönünü geriletmesi, küresel kapitalizm sürecinde işçi sınıfı kimliğinin önemini yitirmesi ve egemen ideolojinin hegemonya aracı olarak medyanın sınıf kimliğine bakışı bu çalışmanın temel problematiğini oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, son yılların önemli tartışma konularından olan kimlik konusunu incelemek ve medyada sınıf kimliğinin temsilini Tekel işçi eylemi örneğinde tartışmaktır.
