A Survey on Patient Relatives-Determined Communication Barriers According to Various Variables in Hospitals

Hastanelerde Hasta Yakınları Tarafından Belirlenen İletişim Engellerinin Çeşitli Değişkenlere Göre İncelenmesi

Abstract

This study aims to examine communication barriers identified by patient relatives at Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital according to various variables. The population of the survey is the relatives of patients who take ambulatory care facilities and in-patient treatment at Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital which is located in the southeastern of Turkey. The sample of the study consist of voluntary 450 patient relatives. The data of the study were obtained between the dates of 01-20 April 2016 with structured questionnaire form. In the analysis of the data, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation were counted and Man-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallies were used to examine the difference between independent variables and the total scores in the measurement tool; Spearman correlation analysis was used to examine the relation among the sub-dimensions. According to the result of this study, it was determined that need for attention, concern and need for being informed is high level, but prejudice is low level among the patient relatives. As a result of the examination of communication barriers according to patient relatives’ gender, age, educational status and patient types, some differences were determined. In this context, this study is important to determine health communication barriers according to various variables at the patient relatives level and to take measures to solve them.

Özet

Bu çalışma, Gaziantep Üniversitesi Uygulama ve Araştırma Hastanesinde sağlıkhizmeti alan hasta yakınları tarafından belirlenen iletişim engellerinin çeşitli değişkenleregöre incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmanın evrenini, Türkiye’nin Güneydoğusundabulunan Gaziantep Üniversitesi Şahinbey Araştırma ve Uygulama Hastanesinde ayaktave yatarak sağlık hizmeti alan hastaların yakınları, örneklemini ise araştırmaya katılmayagönüllü olan 450 hasta yakını oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri 01-20 Nisan 2016tarihlerinde yapılandırılmış soru formu ile toplanmıştır. Verilerinin analizinde frekans,yüzde, aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma hesaplanmış ve bağımsız değişkenlerle ölçümaracındaki toplam puanlar arasındaki farkı incelemek amacıyla Man-Whitney U testi veKruskal Wallis, alt boyutlar arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesinde ise Spearman Korelasyonanalizi kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışma sonucuna göre hasta yakınlarında ilgi ihtiyacı ile merakve bilgi öğrenme isteği yüksek düzeyde, önyargının düşük düzeyde olduğu belirlenmiştir.İletişim engellerinin hasta yakınının cinsiyeti, yaşı, eğitim durumu ve hasta türüne göreincelenmesi neticesinde bazı farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir. Bu bağlamda çalışma hastayakınları düzeyinde sağlık iletişimi engellerinin çeşitli değişkenlere göre belirlenmesi veçözümüne yönelik önlemlerin alınması noktasında önem taşımaktadır.
