Open Table! On the Changing Feasting Practices

Abstract

Being a type of commensality spun by symbolic webs, the feasts are ac-tivities in which social inequality is both concealed and reproduced and symbolic capital is put into circulation. Within this scope, different feasting habits and their functions will be examined with respect to the particular historical conditions and related social structures and relations, by demonstrating examples from various geographies. This article suggests that today feasts turn out to be commodities and their exchange value forestalls their use-value; yet, in a multiplicity of prac-tices, they can also be performed as a medium of protest to dominant values.

Sembolik ağlarla örülü birlikte yeme-içme pratiği olan şölen-ler, toplumsal eşitsizliğin üzerinin örtülerek yeniden üretildiği, sim-gesel sermayenin dolaşıma girdiği etkinliklerdir. Bu çerçevede, farklı tarihsel koşulların şekillendirdiği toplumsal yapı ve ilişkilere özgü şölen alışkanlıkları ve toplumda üstlendikleri işlevler çeşitli coğrafya-lardan örneklerle tartışılacaktır. Makale; günümüzdeki şölenlerin de-ğişim değerinin kullanım değerinin önüne geçtiğini, piyasada alınıp satılarak birer metaya dönüştüğünü, ancak çok devreli bir sistemde işleyerek hakim değerlerin sınandığı protesto biçimleri olarak da per-formans edildiğini ileri sürmektedir.
