Public Executions As a Form of Power Spectacle

Abstract

In this article, it is suggested that the execution of death penalty conduct-ed publicly in urban spaces in different ways is essentially the spectacle form in which the power is reproduced. For this, public executions are studied concep-tually in terms of urban space, spectacle and power. After a short review of the history of death penalty, the evolution of the execution forms of this punishment is studied and exemplified in France, England and the USA as well as in the Ot-toman Empire and Turkey.

Bu makalede, ölüm cezasının insanlık tarihinin büyük bir bölü-münde kentsel mekânlarda ve halkın gözü önünde çeşitli biçimlerde gerçekleştirilen infazının, özünde iktidarın yeniden üretildiği gösteri biçimleri olduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Bu çerçevede halka açık infazlar, kentsel mekân, iktidar ve gösteri kavramları üzerinden incelenmek-tedir. Ölüm cezasının tarihine kısaca göz atıldıktan sonra bu cezanın yerine getirilişinin İngiltere, Fransa ve ABD’deki gelişim seyrinin yanı sıra Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve Türkiye’de aldığı biçimlere değinil-mekte ve bazı örneklere yer verilmektedir.
