Abstract

At the referendum on the 12th September 2010, the Nationalist Action Party (MHP) as the bearer of the nationalist politics in Turkey, could not prevent the influence of the government party Justice and Development Party (AKP) and got a negative result. This referendum reveals especially two antinomies of the MHP, which has an ultranationalist and fascist ideology depending on a myth of origins. Firstly, whereas the MHP gains political influence by exalting and idealizing the state, it experiences a political fragility as a result of the absence of an identity free from the state-power. As the second antinomy, while the party can mobilize people in certain localities and at certain historical moments with the elements of Islam, it suffers an antinomy because of the incongruities between the concepts of Turkishness and Islam, which have divergent imaginations of the origins, history and geography and so it pushes its grassroots to the field of influence of the Islamic parties and movements.
