Abstract
Low platelet counts can be encountered in patients with ablatio placenta, preeclampsia and disseminated intravascular coagulation; thus the average platelet counts and their shifts in nor¬mal pregnancies during antepartum and postpartum periods for both vaginal and abdominal de¬liveries should be known precisely in order to determine the normal ranges. For this purpose we studied 14 pregnant women who spontaneously delivered vaginally and 14 women who delive¬red by cesafean section. Blood samples were examined for platelet counts, hematocrits and he¬moglobin levels by Coulter counter at admittance and on the postpartum 1st and 3rd days. The decrease in the platelet counts of the cesarean group was statistically significant. There was no significant change in the platelet counts after vaginal deliveries. Hemoglobin levels and hematoc¬rits were also decreased significantly in the postpartum period in cesarean section group.
