Abstract
Astemizole is a new generation antihistamine which is supposed to be devoid of both sedative and anti-cholinergic effects. However, some clinical reports revealed a number of patients who complain dryness of mouth or pharynx while using astemizole. In this animal study, it is purpo¬sed to evaluate the anti-cholinergic effect of astemizole by investigating the morphological chan¬ges in the parotid and submandibulary salivary glands of the rats caused by astemizole. The re¬sults suggested that astemizole could be safely used in recommended doses without causing any anticholinergic adverse effect.

Astemizolün Sıçan Tükrük Bezlerine Etkisi: Işık ve Elektron Mikroskopisi Çalışması Astemizol; Sedatifve antikolinerjik etkileri olmadığı kabul edilen yeni jenerasyon antihistami-niklerdendir. Ancak bazı klinik çalışmaların astemizol kullanan bir kısım hastalarda ağız veya farenks kuruluğu oluştuğuna dair klinik çalışmalar mevcuttur. Bu hayvan çalışmasında; sıçan¬ların parotis ve submandibular tükrük bezlerinde oluşturduğu morfolojik değişiklikler incelene¬rek, astemizolün antikolinerjik etkisi değerlendirildi. Bulgular, astemizolün. önerilen dozlarda herhangi bir antikolinerjik yan etki oluşturmadan kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir.
