Abstract
Diet characteristics of 110 children (47 males, 63 females) with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus with a mean age of11.3±4.0 years were evaluated: All the children were being followed in the Outpatient Clinic of Pediatric Endocrinology Unit and were given education on all aspects of diabetes at regular intervals. The nutritional status of the children was analyzed by body mass index (BMI). which was below 25th centile in 28.2%, between 25-75th centiles in 51.8% and above 75th çentile. in 20%. The nutrition of each child was evaluated for four days without inter-' vention The results showed that carbohydrates constituted 50%, protein 17%andfat 33% of daily total energy. Daily energy consumed and RDA of the nutrients were compared to recommended standards for Turkish children and it was found that most of the children received energy and nearly all'nutrients adequately. However some nutrients (protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A and C) were consumed more and fibre were consumed less than recommended. In conclusion, the nutritional status of the diabetic children is satisfactory in general which may be explained by the continuous and regular education of these children.
