Incomes of Mudarrises in Bursa according to a New Document

Abstract

In the nineteenth century, madrasas lost their former significance against the Western-style schools that were opened within the framework of the modernization movements of the nineteenth century, the madrasas have long served as the cor-nerstone of the Ottoman education system. The most important element of the madrasas is mudarrises (professors) who are responsible for education and training. So much so that in terms of Ottoman education system and ilmiye organization (learned group), which student was educated by which mudar-ris, rather than who was educated in the madrasa. Mudarrises, who were so important in the Ottoman education system, rece-ived all kinds of financial and moral support. For this reason, some of the mudarrises were also supported with the aid given in kind in addition to their salaries for the living conditions. In this study, the aid given in kind and monetary payments made to Bursa's mudarrises will be examined by moving from a do-cument that does not have a date on it but we think that it be-longs to the nineteenth century. Although there is enough in-formation in the archive documents about the fees that the mu-darrises will receive in cash; it is not known exactly what the aid given in kind made to them are, except for some exceptions. So, the importance of this document increases, and it provides a significant contribution to the study of the aid given in kind and the cash revenues of the mudarrises.

Özet

XIX. yüzyıldaki modernleşme hareketleri çerçevesinde açı-lan ve Batı tarzında eğitim veren okullar karşısında eski önemi-ni yitirseler de medreseler, uzun süre Osmanlı eğitim sistemi-nin temel taşı olarak hizmet etmişlerdir. Medreselerin en önem-li unsuru ise; eğitim-öğretim işlerinin sorumlusu olan müder-rislerdir. Öyle ki Osmanlı eğitim sistemi ve ilmiye teşkilatı açı-sından esas olan; kişinin hangi medresede eğitim aldığı değil hangi müderris tarafından yetiştirildiğidir. Osmanlı eğitim sis-temi içinde bu kadar önemli olan müderrisler, maddi-manevi her türlü desteğe nail olmuşlardır. Bu anlayışla müderrislerin bir kısmı, geçim sıkıntısı yaşamamaları için maaşlarına ek ola-rak ayni yardımlarla da desteklenmişlerdir. Bu çalışmada, üze-rinde tarih kaydı olmayan ancak, içindeki bazı bilgilerden ha-reketle 19. yüzyıla ait olduğunu düşündüğümüz bir belgeden hareketle Bursa müderrislerine yapılan nakdi ve ayni ödemeler incelenecektir. Her ne kadar müderrislerin nakit olarak alacak-ları ücretler hakkında arşiv belgelerinde yeterince bilgi varsa da; kendilerine yapılan ayni ödemelerin ne olduğu, bazı istisna-lar dışında, tam olarak bilinmemektedir. Bu yüzden, bu belge-nin önemi daha da artmakta ve müderrislerin ayni ve nakdi ge-lirlerine ilişkin çalışmalara önemli bir katkı sağlamaktadır.
