The Process of Mine Extracted in Van Province and Its Contribution to the War Industry During the Reign of Selim II

Abstract

Ottoman Empire’s Van Province, located on the Ira-nian border, has been constantly exposed to the threats and oppressions of the Safavid State because of its geopolitical and geostrategic position. Van's border security carried a crucial mission not only as a regional wall but also as a countrywide line of defense. In this research, based on archival documents, it is aimed to ascertain the importance of using the mines produ-ced in Van province in terms of border and country security, as well as the economic contribution provided by the mines in the regions where the mines were excavated. In addition to the saltpeter and sulfur used in the production of gunpowder, lead, iron and other minerals were of high quality and at the same time, they maintained the continuity of the mines. Thus, the re-gions where these mines are excavated have become a center of attraction. The continued role of these mining enterprises in de-fense of the country in the following centuries is reckoned to be depended on the richness of their reserves. In addition to estab-lishing the necessary stages of the Van Province in the field of war industry and sending these mines as raw materials, it is at-tempted to be documented that they have been sent out of the region already processed as well.

Özet

Osmanlı Devletinin İran sınırında bulunan Van Vilayeti, je-opolitik ve jeostratejik konumundan ötürü devamlı olarak Sa-fevi devletinin tehdit ve baskılarına maruz kalmıştır. Van’ın sı-nır güvenliği sadece bölge açısından değil aynı zamanda ülke savunması açısından da önemli görevler üstlenmiştir. Bu araş-tırmamızda arşiv belgelerine dayanılarak gerek sınır, gerekse ülke güvenliği açısından Van Vilayetinde çıkarılan madenlerin harp sanayiinde kullanılmasındaki öneminin yanı sıra maden-lerin çıkarıldıkları bölgelerde sağladığı ekonomik katkı da orta-ya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Bölgede özellikle barut yapımında kullanılan güherçile ve kükürt ’ün yanı sıra kurşun, demir gibi madenlerin kaliteli olması aynı zamanda bu madenlerin sürek-liliğini sağlamıştır. Böylece bu madenlerin çıkarıldığı bölgeler bir cazibe merkezi haline gelmiştir. Bu maden işletmelerinin daha sonraki yüzyıllarda da ülke savunmasındaki etkin rolleri-ni sürdürmeleri, rezervlerinin zenginliğine bağlanmaktadır. Van Vilayetinin harp sanayii dalında ihtiyaç duyulan kollarının kurulması ve bu madenlerin hammadde olarak gönderilmesi-nin dışında, bölge dışına işlenmiş olarak da gönderildiği belge-lerle ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.
