Abstract
Though there is still much to learn, it must be admitted that Magnesia on the Meander is one of the ancient cities on which we have a great deal of information. We owe all that we know about this city to some ancient writers, to inscriptions, to coins, to travellers who visited the city and to the archeological excavations which have a long past. Mentioned sources provided important information which is hard to neglect and which sheds light on socio-cultural history by giving significant information especially about religious beliefs in the city. Epigraphical sources which were found in the extremely large territory of Magnesia and were introduced to academia indicated that Goddess Artemis had a very special position in the religious beliefs of people in the city. In other words the goddess was consecrated in the city with the epithet of Artemis Leucophryene and she reminds Artemis of Ephesus in terms of characteristics.
