An Evaluation of the Historical Geography of Rize and Its Vicinity during the Middle Ages

Abstract
This study examines the impact of Rize's geographical location and features on the history of city and presents that because of its mountainous geography population of Rize has almost always been scarce but its underground resources has made it a significant coastal city. The article also traces the existence of Turkish settlement in the region to antiquity.

Bu çalışma Rize'nin coğrafî konumu ve özelliklerinin şehrin tarihi üzerindeki etkisini inceleyerek, dağlık yapısı nedeniyle yerleşik nüfusunun tarih boyunca az olmasına rağmen yeraltı kaynaklarının Rize'yi önemli bir sahil şehri haline getirdiğini tespit etmektedir. Makale ayrıca bölgedeki Türk varlığının antik döneme kadar uzandığını coğrafi yer isimlerinin yardımıyla açıklamaktadır.
