Abstract
This article examines the art, trade, and agriculture branches of the Ottoman idâdî or the secondary schools, which were opened in 1901, and outlines the causes of their closure in 1904. The study suggests that since their foundation in 1874 idâdî school graduates were employed by the state and this created a misunderstanding that all graduates were to be employed by the states. While the state aimed to create business entrepreneurs through occupational branches, lack of promise for future employment lowered the demand for the occupational branches and the logistical challenges in the practices of the occupational branches paved the road for their elimination
