Abstract
This article examines the economic development of Tarsus in the nineteenth century. While the economic life in the city flourished and the welfare of its residents improved with the increasing cultivation of industrial agricultural products, such as cotton, toward the end of nineteenth century major trade operations shifted to the close-by port city Mersin. As Immanual Wallerstein indicated in his center-periphery theory being left under the shadow of Mersin, Tarsus became a periherial trade city rather than a central location
Özet
Bu makale Tarsus şehrinin ondokuzuncu yüzyıldaki iktisadi gelişimini incelemektedir. Şehirde pamuk gibi sanayiye yönelik tarım ürünlerinin artmasıyla, iktisadi hayat canlanmış halkın refah seviyesi yükselmiştir ancak liman kenti Mersin'in gelişmesiyle beraber ondokozuncu yüzyılın sonlarına doğru ticaretin merkezi Mersin'e doğru kayma göstermiştir. Immanuel Wallerstein'ın merkez-çevre kuramında işaret ettiği gibi ondokozuncu yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Mersin'in gölgesinde kalan Tarsus çevre konumuna inmiştir
