Abstract
Mount Holyoke Female Seminary was founded by chemist and educator Mary Lyon (1797-1849) in South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA, in 1837. This school is the first independent college for female students in the United States, and in 1893 the institution’s name was changed to Mount Holyoke College. In this study, the founder of the school, the educational philosophy of the school, and the effects of some of its graduates that worked in the Ottoman State as ABCFM missionaries are examined. This study tries to show that these missionary women founded schools similar to Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in the Ottoman State and indulge in educational missionary activities in Anatolia and supported the policies of the American Board in the Ottoman State.
