Derbend City According to Medieval Islamic Geographers

Abstract

The city of Derbend, founded by the Sassanids onthe west coast of the Caspian Sea in the Caucasusto serve as a base and embankment in order to stopthe invasions from the north, started to stand out asa border region due to its strategic importance inthe Early Middle Ages. The importance of the citydue to its location has increased in economic terms over time. The city became the meeting point ofmerchants belonging to various peoples comingfrom the north and south, and this situationdeveloped in the era of Sassanid - KhazarKhaganate and later Arab - Khazar Khaganatestates. Of course, it should be mentioned that itconstitutes a market in terms of slave trade.We will try to illuminate these pointschronologically in the light of the Islamic historyand geographers of the Middle Ages and modernresearch.

Sâsânilerin kuzeyden gelen akınları durdurmak amacıylabir üs ve set vazifesi görmesi amacıyla Kafkasya’daHazar Denizi’nin batı kıyısında kurdukları Derbendşehri, Erken Orta Çağ’da stratejik öneminden dolayı birsınır bölgesi olarak öne çıkmaya başlamıştır.Konumundan dolayı önemi artan şehrin zamanlaekonomik bakımdan da değeri artmıştır. Şehir, kuzeydenve güneyden gelen çeşitli halklara mensup tacirlerinbuluşma noktası olmuş ve bu durum Sâsânî - HazarKağanlığı ve devamında ise Arap - Hazar Kağanlığıdevletleri devrinde gelişme göstermiştir. Bu arada şehrinköle ticareti bakımından da bir pazar teşkil ettiğinibelirtmek gerekir.İşte bu noktaları, Orta Çağ İslâm tarih vecoğrafyacılarının bize bıraktığı malumat ve telif eserlerışığında kronolojik olarak aydınlatmaya çalışacağız.
