Rediscover Europe or A Collective Travel From Ottoman Empire to Austria-Hungarian Empire in 1909

Abstract

Following the dethroning of Abdulhamid Second,efforts to get to know and develop relations withEurope were accelerated. Students were being sent toEurope for a long time. New policies were developedin this period. The number of visits by seniormanagers, civil servants and people from differentsocial strata and profession were increased. Thenumber of students to be educated in Europe was alsoraised.235 people participated to the visit that was carried outto Austro-Hungarian Empire. There were people fromdifferent professions within the group including MPs,mayors, doctors, merchants and officers. The journeywas incited by Tanin newspaper that was somehow anorgan of İttihat and Terakki Party. The newspaper wasvoicing “the fact that every Ottoman citizen shoulddefinitely see Europe”. The delegation whosemajority attending the trip from Thessalonica, visitedsome important cities including Budapest, Pressburg(Bratislava), Vienna, Prague and Trieste. They werewelcomed and seen off with ceremonies in places thatwere visited. Friendship and solidarity were stressedin the meetings that took place in the process. Thedelegation visited many places such as factories,industrial places, schools and garrisons. They alsoengaged with social and cultural events and madeobservations about art, entertainment, social structureand town planning. Business contacts and friendshipswere established. The article was presented primarilyon the basis of the newspapers İttihat ve Terakki, NeueFreie Presse, Tanin, Yeni Asır, Yeni Gazete, YeniTasviriefkâr and archive sources.

Özet

II. Abdülhamid’in tahttan indirilmesinden sonra Avrupa’yıtanıma ve ilişkileri geliştirme çabaları hızlandı. Avrupa’yaöğrenci gönderme uzun yıllardır yapılıyordu. Bu dönemdeyeni politikalar geliştirildi. Gönderilen öğrenci sayısı ile üstdüzey yönetici ve memur ziyaretlerinin artırılması, farklımesleklerden ve farklı toplum kesimlerinden insanlarınAvrupa’yı ziyaret etmelerinin sağlanması bunlardanbazılarıydı.Avusturya-Macaristan İmparatorluğu’na 1909 güzündeyapılan seyahate 235 kişi katıldı. İçlerinde mebus, belediyebaşkanı, doktor, tüccar, sanayici, subay gibi değişikmesleklerden insanlar vardı. Geziyi İttihat ve TerakkiCemiyeti’nin bir nevi yayın organı olan Tanin gazetesiteşvik etmişti. Gazete her Osmanlı vatandaşının mutlakaAvrupa’yı görmesi gerektiğini dile getiriyordu. ÇoğunluğuSelanik’ten gelmiş olan bu insanlar Budapeşte, Pressburg(Bratislava), Viyana, Prag ve Trieste gibi önemli şehirleriziyaret ettiler. Gezi boyunca gittikleri yerlerde törenlerlekarşılandılar ve uğurlandılar. Yapılan görüşmelerde dostlukve kardeşlik vurgusu yapıldı. Şehirlerdeki sanayikuruluşları, okullar, askeri birlikler ile tarihi ve turistikyerler ziyaret edildi. Gezi süresince çeşitli sosyal, kültürelortamlara girilerek sanat, eğlence ve toplumsal yapı,şehircilik gibi daha birçok sahaya dair bilgi ve tecrübebirikimi edinildi. Ticari bağlantılar ve dostluklar kuruldu.Çalışma, öncelikle İttihat ve Terakki, Neue Freie Presse,Tanin, Yeni Asır, Yeni Gazete, Yeni Tasviriefkâr gazeteleriile arşiv kaynakları temelinde ortaya konulmuştur.
