Abstract
Aim: Previous studies investigating effect of age on glycated hemoglobin A1c value have yielded inconsistent findings. We investigated effect of age on glycated hemoglobin A1c in Turkish population with normal glycose tolerance. Material and method: This prospective study were carried out in 55 subjects with normal glycose tolerance according to 1997 American Diabetes Association criterion by oral glycose tolerance test. The subjects were dichotomised by median value for age (45> and < 45 years), and levels of fasting and 2nd hour postlo-ad plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin A1c of these subgroups were compared. Results: The subjects who have equal or higher 45 years (n=28) had statistically significant higher glycated hemoglobin A1c and fasting venous plasma glycose levels than the those who have less than 45 years (n=27) (5.90±0.51 vs 5.58±0.52, p=0.025 and 97.25±5.47 vs 91.59±9.40 mg/dL, p=0.008, respectively). When all 55 patients were assessed as a whole, statistically significant positive correlations were found between fasting venous plasma glycose and age (r=0.446, p=0.001), glycated hemoglobin A1c (r=0.419, p=0.001), body mass index (r=0,273, p=0,044) values. In regression analysis, the only factor affecting glycated hemoglobin A1c levels was found to be fasting venous plasma glycose levels (r2=0.175, p=0.001). Conclusion: Older age non-diabetic population, even below conventionally defined diabetic thresholds, have higher fasting plasma glucose and secondary to this higher glycated hemoglobin A1 c values.
