Comparison of postoperative complications of laparoscopic appendectomy and open appenectomy

Abstract

Aim: Compare postoperative complications and discuss the results of laparoscopic appendectomy(LA) and open appendectomy(OA), which were performed at second grade medical centers. METHODS: The study group consisted of 52 patients suffering from acute appendicitis. 19 patients underwent LA and 33 patients underwent OA. Comparisons were based on duration of staying at hospital and postoperative complications Results: The mean age was 31.3 years (15-60) at LA and 34.5 years (11-69) at OA. The average of duration of stay at hospital was 1.4 days (1-3) at LA and 2.7 days (1-4) at OA. Evaluating the complications, superficial wound infection was detected in one patient at LA (%5.3) and two patients (%6.1) at OA. Mortality was not seen. CONCLUSION: For LA, hospital stay was significantly shorter, postoperative complication is the same as OA. LA is minimal invasive, also can be safety method to open appendectomy that the reason of giving chance for explorating the other intraabdominal organs and diminishing the duration of patient recovery.

Özet

Amaç: İkinci basamak bir sağlık kuruluşunda yapılan laparoskoik apendektomi(LA) ile açık apendoktmi(AA) yi irdelemek komplikasyonlarını karşılaştırmak. Metod: Ağustos 2007-Ağustos 2008 tarihleri arasında Kars Devlet Hastanesinde Akut apandisit nedeniyle opere edilen 52 olgu çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Bulgular: Hastaların 19’u na (% 36.5) Laparaskopik appendektomi(LA), 33’üne(% 63.5) açık appendektomi( AA) uygulanmıştır. LA da olguların yaş ortalaması: 31.3(15-60) yıl iken AA’da yaş ortalaması:34.5 (11- 69) yıldır. LA’da hastanede ortalama kalış süresi: 1.4(1-3) gün iken AA’da 2.7 (1-4) gündür. Komplikasyonlar değerlendirildiğinde LA’da bir olguda (%5.3), AA da iki olguda (%6.1) yara yeri infeksiyonu gözlenmiştir. Çalışmaya dahil edilen olgularda mortalite görülmemiştir. Sonuç: Akut apandisit tedavisinde laparoskopik appandektomi, minimal invaziv olması, operasyon esnası nda batın içi diğer organların eksplorasyon imkanı sağlaması ve hastanın kısa sürede iyileşmesi nedeniyle açık appendektomiye alternatif olarak güvenle uygulanabilir
