Abstract
Children with a body mass index >27 who had referred to our clinic between February to November 2007 were studied with respect to their lipid profile, and their waist length. The children’s parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts were also studied with respect to their lipid profiles and blood glucose levels, presence of chronic illnesses in the family like coronary artery diseases, acute coronary syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, were also studied. Their smoking habits were analyzed. The body mass indexes were also measured. The children’s age was 2-15 years. There were 46 patients (26 girls, 20 boys). The LDL cholesterol levels of children were found to be closely related to their father’s total cholesterol levels (p0.05). In conclusion; the lipid profile of the patients were found to be parallel to their fathers. This would hold light to similar correlations between children and other relatives that would be in larger populations.
