Abstract
Turkey, like other developing countries, is a dependent country for external resources due to itsrapidly increasing energy demand, particularly in terms of technology and financial needs. Turkeyis also dependent on foreign countries for oil and petroleum products. This situation crea tes astrategic sensitivity and has a significant effect on the foreign trade deficit. This increases theimportance of the production of alternative energy sources for Turkey. The use of petroleumproducts causes climate change, global warming and release of toxic and carcinogenic substancesthat cause environmental pollution into the atmosphere. In this regard, the production and use ofbiodiesel as an alternative and renewable source of energy production should be provided inTurkey as well as all over the world. Given the first priority to the agricultural production for fooduse, the number of countries that promotes the production and use of biodiesel are increasing. Withthe implementation of 1 million hectares of irrigated area of the GAP Project, it will give thepossibility of great importance to Turkey s economy by providing the production crops such assafflower and rapeseed as winter crops as well as alternative energy sources to close the gap withthe biodiesel oil production in the country.
