Abstract

This study investigates the performance of the VADASE (Variometric Approach for Displacement Analysis Stand-alone Engine) approach, which is capable of detecting dynamic motions utilizing a single GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receiver without requiring precise satellite orbit and clock products in real-time, and the contribution of multi-GNSS observations to this technique. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the VADASE technique in detecting dynamic motions, harmonic oscillations at 5 mm amplitude and frequency values ranging from 0.25 Hz to 3.5 Hz, representing possible structural movements, were produced using a single axis shake table. Moreover, 1995 Kobe earthquake was simulated to investigate the performance of the VADASE method in capturing seismic waveforms. VADASE results based on GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and GPS/Glonass/Galileo/BeiDou observations at 20 Hz sampling rate were compared to relative positioning, Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and GNSSindependent sensor Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) data in both frequency and time domains. Considering the results of the analysis, the findings show that the VADASE approach can be used reliably in the estimation of harmonic oscillation frequencies. Moreover, harmonic oscillation and earthquake simulation experiments have clearly revealed that the VADASE approach with multi-GNSS observations can capture dynamic motions more precisely, and multi-GNSS observations improve the dynamic behavior detection performance of only-GPS observations by 30% on average. The outcomes of the study show that the high-rate real-time VADASE approach can effectively monitor dynamic motions for structural health monitoring and GPS/GNSSseismology applications, and can be reliably used for earthquake and structural health early warning and rapid risk assessment, and also, it can be integrated with other sensors.
