Abstract

The emergence of the orientalist collections in Western Europe had been an extension of the collecting the objects and monuments of the antique civilizations. Thus, the European civilization, which re-discovered the antiquity in the Renaissance, would figure out the knowledge of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. As the Antiquitiy had been prevailed on the orient of the modern times, collections of antiquity led to collections from the Orient as well. Oriental collecting influenced the foundation of the institutional basis of classical orientalism. The imperial states attaching special importance to the oriental studies collected those kind of collections in their public libraries. Russia, as an empire which located partly in Asia, on one hand purchased the oriental manuscripts from Europe. On the other hand she collected and levied manuscripts and objects such as tombstones, coins and the other oriental objects on the occupied lands from the Ottoman and Persian Empire in order to exhibit them in her museums as well as served them in the libraries for the use of the orientalists. This article aims to examine the Russian strategies on the collection of the oriental manuscripts from the near east and the establishment of the oriental libraries in Russia.
