Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to discuss the way Islam with its manifold legitimization power influenced the formation of the notions of Turk, Turkishness and Turkish national identity through the concept of the 'TurkishIslamic Synthesis'. To reach this aim, firstly, we delved into the discourse on pluralism in Turkey. Since the concept of 'Turkish-Islamic Synthesis' aimed at reconciling the two traditional wings of the Turkish right in their struggle against the Left, we then investigated the impact on Turkish political life of The Aydınlar Ocağı Association, a creator and promoter of the concept. The study concluded that contrary to its expressed mission of unifying the two traditional wings of the Turkish Right and/or of fitting them into the Muslim concept of millet (nation), 'The Turkish-Islamic Synthesis' served the dissolution of the Turkish and Kurdish ethnic and cultural identities within Islam. As a new hegemonic project, 'The Turkish-Islamic Synthesis' started affecting more than before the attitude of the Turkish public towards the world.
