The Role of Translation in the Enlightenment Process of Turkey

Abstract

It is a well known fact that there is a close connection between the enlightenment process of societies and translation activities. It can be argued that translation, offering a wide variety of resources which are particularly required by the societies in transition, plays an effective role in contributing to the artistic and intellectual dynamics of societies. This study will discuss translation which has had an important function in the enlightenment of Turkish society and how it has been granted a distinguished position with governmental support and by means of the most positive developments encountered in translation history with its consequences. I will also analyze the way translation activities were carried out in this intensive period of translation between 1940 and 1966 and the function of translation in the enlightenment of Turkish society.

Özet

Toplumların aydınlanma süreciyle çeviri edimi arasında sıkı bir bağ olduğu bilinmektedir. Özellikle geçiş dönemindeki toplumların gereksindiği yenilikler konusunda topluma geniş kaynaklar sunan çevirilerin, toplumun sanatsal ve düşünsel devingenliğinin artırılması konusunda etkili olduğu söylenebilir. Bu makalede, Türk toplumunun aydınlanmasında önemli bir yere sahip olan çevirinin, devlet desteği ile çeviri tarihinde benzeri olmayan olumlu gelişmelerle toplumda saygın bir yer edinmesini, sonuçları ile birlikte tartışacağız. Çalışmamızda, 1940 ile 1966 yılları arasında yaklaşık yirmi altı yılı kapsayan bu yoğun çeviri döneminde çeviri etkinliğinin nasıl biçimlendiği ve çeviri olgusunun Türk toplumunun aydınlanmasında nasıl bir işlevi yerine getirdiği irdelenecektir.
