Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to reveal the social and patriarchal patterns embedded in the world of dentistry. This ethnographic study is based on data collected through interviews with both female and male dentists working for a stale hospital or an Oral and Dental Health Center (ODHC) in Mersin. This study includes these dentists' narratives on the social character of dentistry, spatial organizations, and working conditions. The research findings, namely narratives of the dentists, indicate that dentistry as a profession does not only consist of treatments such as tooth extraction, filling, or root canal therapy. On the contrary, dentistry is a profession shaped by social relations or patriarchal patterns and hence a profession performed accordingly. These patterns are reproduced and maintained strongly in gender relations, labour forms, spatial divisions of labour, and specialization areas in dentistry. In other words, it is possible to see the roots of patriarchal patterns in many factors that lead to the view of dentistry as a male-dominated profession and to the labour division among dentists, dental assistants, and dental mechanics. These patterns also construct spatial divisions of labour such as state hospital settings, private dental clinics and specialization areas such as oral and maxillofacial surgery, and pedodontics in dentistry.
