Abstract

Immigrant receiving countries are a fact of our century. Germany has had a cosmopolitan structure and become a receiving country due to the invitation of 'guest' workers ("Gastarbeiter") with various ethnic backgrounds as a new labour force since the early 60s and other immigrants from many different countries for different reasons for the following years. Therefore, the German society has been a home for the people with different cultures and ethnic backgrounds over the years. And the effects of this social differentiation have appeared in every aspect of life, and one is the programmes on German televisions. In the 2000s. TV shows in the %ethno-comedy' genre produced and presented by many Turco-German stand-up and comedy artists have been on German TV stations and of great interest to public. As the title implies, these comedy programmes reflect the adaptation problems of those with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds who immigrated to and began to live in Germany and their linguistic and cultural differences compared to the German society. In this study. Kaya Yanar's show 'Was guckst du?!' (What are you looking at?!) is taken as an example case and the Turkish characters peculiar to the show are analysed. This study is primarily focused on the language employed by these characters as Turks in Germany speak an ethnic variation of the German language called 'Kanak Sprak' and Turks slang'. It is also emphasized in the study that how the language spoken by the foreigners is developed, and how it is culturally and linguistically important. The study aims to analyse the ethnic dialect, humour and jokes in some sketches from Yanar's, a Turco-German stand-up and comedy artist, show 'Was guckst du?!' and more importantly, to discuss how they might be translated. Even though 'Ethno-comedy' has universal contents, the difficulty in translating these language variations, puns and jokes in these shows is demonstrated for they are settled in the cultural context of the language they are uttered.
