Supernumerary teeth

Abstract

In the dental arches, the teeth which are more than the normal number are called supernumerary. Super¬numerary teeth are seen both in decidous and permanent dentitions. Supernumerary teeth are more often seen in the maxilla than the mandible. Additionally they can also appear unilaterally or bila¬terally in one of the jaws or both. These teeth may cause retardation in eruption, deviation in the erup¬tive path and malocclusions as well as impaction of the teeth may cause retardation in eruption, devia¬tion in the eruptive path and'malocclusions as well as impaction of the teeth. These teeth can remainimpacted for years without any symptoms. The most common type is mesiodens in the maxillary, anterior region. These teeth can also lead to cystic lesions. These problems can be prevented by early diagnosis of supernumerary teeth. In this article the etiology and location of supermunerary teeth and problems that may arise in the dental arches due to them will be discussed. Also a case at an early stage which had been treated and followed up in our clinic for eight years will be presented.

Dental arklarda normal sayıdan fazla olan dişlere supernumere veya artı dişler adı verilir. Supernumere dişlere hem süt hem de sürekli dişlenmede rastlana-bilmektedir. Ancak daimi dişlenmede çok daha fazla görülmektedir. Çoğunlukla üst çenede olmak üzere üst ve alt çenelerde tek tek veya her ikisinde birlikte, tek taraflı veya iki taraflı olarak gözlenebilir. Bu dişlerin pekçoğu komşu dişlerin sürmelerinde gecik¬melere, sürme yönlerinin sapmasına veya bu dişlerin gömülü kalmalarına neden olabilirler. Bu dişler bazen belirti vermeksizin gömülü kalabilirler. En fazla rastla¬nılan tipi üst çene ön bölgedeki mesiodenslerdir. Bu dişler kistik oluşumlara da yol açabilirler. Supernu¬mere dişlerin erken dönemde teşhisi ile ortaya çıkabi¬lecek sorunların büyük ölçüde önüne geçilebilir. Bu yazımızda supernumere dişlerin etyolojisi, yerleşim bölgeleri, dişlere ait arklarda neden olabilecekleri sorunlar tartışılacak ve kliniğimize erken dönemde başvurmuş ve sekiz sene takibi ve tedavisi yapılmış olgumuz sunulacaktır.
