Levels of trace elements and oxidative parameters in Malignant Mesothelioma

Abstract

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a type of a cancerwith a poor prognosis and patients can benefit form the treatmentof only partially. Trace elements play a direct or indirectrole. in the pathogenesis of many diseases. In this study levelsof trace elements and oxidative parameters. were analyzed inMPM patientsForty-eight MPM patients and 52 control cases without anychronic diseases who were followed up in our UniversityHospital followed were included in the study. The study included24 male and 24 female patients. The mean age of patientswith MPM were 55.8 years. Total of 39 patients had asbestosexposure (81.3 %) and mean duration of exposure to asbestoswas 34 years. Total epithelial types in 33 patients (68.8 %)were detected. Pleural fluid cytology was positive in 13 patients(27.1 %).Levels of copper (Cu) levels were higher than the controlgroup in patients with MPM. Zinc (Zn) levels did not differbetween the two groups (Table 1). In addition, malonyl dialdehyde(MDA) levels were higher in theMPM group, and nitricoxide (NO) was lower in the MPM group (Table 1).The role trace element and oxidative parameters in the followup, progression and prognosis of MPM should be investigatedin larger scale studies.

Özet

Malign Plevral Mezotelyoma (MPM) kötü prognoza sahip birkanser türüdür ve hastaların yalnızca az bir kısmı tedavidenyarar görür. Eser elementler birçok hastalığın patogenezindedoğrudan veya dolaylı olarak rol oymaktadır. Bu çalışmadaMPM hastalarında eser element ve oksidatif parametrelerindüzeyinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır.Üniversite hastanesinde takip edilen 48 MPM hastası ve herhangibir kronik hastalığı olmayan 52 kontrol olgusu çalışmayaalınmıştır. Çalışmaya 24 erkek ve 24 kadın hasta dahil edilmiştir.MPM hastalarının yaş ortalaması 55,8 yıldı. Toplam 39hastanın asbest teması vardı (% 81,3) ve ortalama asbesttemas süresi 34 yıldı. Toplam 33 hastada epitelyal tip (% 68,8)saptandı. Plevral sıvı sitolojisi ise 13 hastada pozitifti (% 27,1).Eser element seviyelerine bakıldığında Bakır (Cu) düzeyiMPM hastalarında kontrol grubuna göre yüksek saptandı.Çinko (Zn) düzeyleri arasında ise her iki grup arasında farkyoktu (Tablo 1). Ayrıca Malonil dialdehit (MDA) düzeyleriMPM grubunda yüksek ve Nitrik oksit (NO) ise MPM grubundadüşük olarak saptandı (Tablo 1).MPM hastalığında hastalığın takibinde ve prognozda eser elementve oksidatif parametrelerin rolleri konusunda geniş seriliçalışmalara gereksinim vardır.
