The Secret Language of the Gifts in the Abbasid Society according to Ibn Yahya al-Washsa

Abstract

Ibn Yahya al-Washsha (d. 325/937) writes about a social class of people who are lovers and refined people (society) and also pretending to be refined persons in the Abbasid society in his glorious book which is called Kitab al-Muwashsha (al-Zarf wa al-Zurafa) in the beginning of the tenth century. He mentions the common rules of giving presents among the lovers and refined people (society), their attitudes concerning the gifts given to each other and the special meanings which they imputed to the gifts in various chapters. This paper aims to present the etiquette of giving each other a gift among them, and their manners of using secret languages connected with gifts, and their attitudes of refinement.

Özet

İbn Yahyâ el-Veşşâ (ö. 325/937), onuncu yüzyılın başlarında kaleme aldığı Kitâbü’l-Müveşşâ (ez-Zarf ve’z-Zürefâ) adlı eserinde Abbâsî toplumunda yaşayan sosyal bir tabakayı; âşıkları, kibarları ve kibarlık taslayanları ele almaktadır. O, çeşitli başlıklar altında âşıklar ve kibar insanlar arasında yaygın olan hediyeleşme kurallarından, birbirlerine verdikleri hediyelerle ilgili tutumlarından ve hediyelere yükledikleri özel anlamlardan bahsetmektedir. Bu yazı, Abbâsî toplumunda yaşayan âşıkların ve kibar insanların hediyeleşme ile ilgili tutumlarını, hediyelere özel anlamlar yüklemelerini ve kibarlık anlayışlarını sizlere aktarmayı hedeflemektedir
