Abstract
The Palaeozoic of Istanbul sequence and its basement lithologies made up of high grade metamorphics (the Sünnice Group), magmatic (the Bolu Granitoid Complex) and volcanic rocks (the Çasurtepe Formation) are exposed between the Bolu-Yedigöller area, to the north of Bolu. The Bolu Granitoid Complex comprises of a group of intrusive rocks of variable composition and size, generated through multiple episodes of magmatism and is represented by two separate intrusive bodies within the study area, the Tüllükiriş Plüton in the west and the Kapikaya Plüton in the east. These two intrusives, forming the subject of this study, are of mainly tonalite and granodiorite in composition and of I-type intrusions. More felsic and mafic compositional varieties, however, forming zones within the plutons and, locally, S-type granitoidic characteristics due to crustal contaminations do also occur. Chemical characteristics of the granitoids indicate that these are volcanic arc-type granitoids (VAG) and are products of immature arcs developed during early stages of a subduction. Furthermore, textural and chemical characteristics of the plutons show that these are subvolcanic intrusions, emplaced at shallow depths and are calc-alkaline in composition. The plutons tectonically overlie, the high grade metamorphics (the Sünnice Group) along the NNE-SSW trending Karadere Fault. The Tüllükiriş Pluton intrudes the volcanic rocks (the Çaşurtepe Formation) but the Kapıkaya Pluton is in tectonic contact with them. Clasts of all these three magmatic and metamorphic rocks are present within the detritic sediments, termed the Işığandere Formation, that corresponds to Lower Ordovician basal units of the Palaeozoic of Istanbul. Therefore, the age of the magmatism can be constrained as pre-Early Ordovician with confidence. When subduction processes responsible from this magmatism is taken into account, this period of time should correspond to Cadornian orogeny.
