Abstract
Western Pontides is made up of three major tectonic units. Sakarya continent and İstanbul - Zonguldak tectonic units are represent two different continental fragments. Bolu - Eskipazar zone runs between the two continental fragments as a remnant of Intra - Pontide ocean and related basin(s). In the Istanbul -Zonguldak tectonic units five tectonic zones are differentiated according to their rock units, stratigraphy, structural features and tectonic positions. These terranes that are situated around the Bolu - Eskipazar - Ereğli - Kurucaşile area are; 1. The Sünnice structural high, 2. The Karabük basin, 3. The Ulus basin, 4. The Devrek - Çaycuma structural low and 5. The Western Black Sea mountains. These divisions are critical to our understanding of the geological evolution of the Western Pontides. In this paper; internal features of these terranes, their relationships with one another and their tectonic significance will be documented. Finally the generation of the Cide -Devrek virgation, which was described for the first time in this study, will be discussed. The Devrek - Çaycuma low is represented by a thick Mesozoic -Tertiary sedimentary sequence. Development of the basin started from Late Campanian - Early Maastrichtian and lasted to the compressional tectonics in the end of the Early Eocene time. The units, cropping out in this basin, were deformed and imbricated together with the basement Paleozoic rocks in the Kurucaşile area to the northeastern of this region. This deformation is represented by thrusting which was transferred into folding and a strike slip tectonics towards the Devrek - Çaycuma basin to the west. These structural features which indicate a "simple virgation of the first type" of Argand (1924), was collectively named Cide -Devrek virgation as a result of this study.
