Teaching Functions Through Excel

Abstract

The aim of the study is to develop a computer-based mathematics teaching material in Excel software for the subject of graphics of the functions likey=ax+b and y=a$x^2$+bx+c. At the beginning, the material was introduced to the computer experts for evaluating the material in terms of its technical aspects. As a result of this evaluation the material was revised and introduced to 15 teachers as an in-service course to investigate that what would be the limitations on the use of the material in real classroom environments. The data was collected via observations, interviews and the participants’ reflections on their experiences with the material. At the end of the course, the participants in terms of quality and quantity positively approved the competence of the material. These findings have shown that the material developed as its final form after the implementing could be used to enrich the math courses and help the students with their learning.

Özet

Bu çalışmada; matematik müfredatındany=ax+b ve y=a$x^2$+bx+c tipinde fonksiyonların grafikleri konusu seçilerek Excel programında matematik öğretimi materyali geliştirilmiştir. Bu materyal, önce bilgisayar uzmanlarına tanıtılmıştır. Bilgisayar uzmanları, materyali teknik özellikleri açısından değerlendirdi. Daha sonra, hazırlanan BDMÖ materyali hizmet içi kurs şeklinde 15 öğretmene tanıtılarak gerçek sınıf ortamlarında kullanılabilirliğinin sınırlarının neler olabileceği araştırıldı. Veriler gözlem, mülakat, anket ve katılımcıların yazılı görüşleri yoluyla toplanmıştır. Yapılan araştırma sonucu materyalin yeterliliği hem nicel hem de nitel olarak öğretmenler tarafından olumlu olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bu bulgular, uygulamadan sonra yapılan değişikliklerle birlikte materyalinin matematik derslerini zenginleştirmek amacıyla kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir.
