An extreme purist periodical in language construction: "towards our pure language"

Abstract

The new Turkish State which was established after having won the Turkish War of Independence starts to implement fundamental and crucial changes and transformations in the fields of politics, society, culture, etc. during the successive years. Among these changes and transformations, the linguistic revolution undoubtedly constitutes a vital place. With this revolution which was realized by the State at the end of 1920s, the Turkish language sets on a novel path and thus begins various searches, thoughts, and studies on the Turkish language. The main dynamic, organizer, and implementer of these actions is certainly the State itself. However, it cannot be stated that the civil organizations or individuals who were left out of this power were indifferent to those actions. The most concrete and striking example of it is the extreme purist language periodical named Towards Our Pure Language, which started to be published in 1932. From the moment it began its publication life until the end, this periodical both considered purification which was the official view of the State as its main problem and supported it. Moreover, it made irrational suggestions most of the time. Therefore, this article aims at studying the formal features of the said periodical and its role in the aforementioned process by putting it in the center.

İstiklâl Mücadelesi’nin kazanılmasından sonra kurulan yeni Türk Devleti müteakip yıllarda siyasal, toplumsal, kültürel… alanlarda köklü ve ciddî değişim ve dönüşümleri gerçekleştirmeye başlar. Bu değişim ve dönüşümler arasında şüphe yok ki dil devrimi önemli yer işgal eder. Devletin, yirmili yılların sonunda gerçekleştirdiği bu devrimle Türkçe, artık yeni bir mecraya girer ve böylece Türkçe üzerinde çeşitli arayışlar, düşünüşler ve çalışmalar başlar. Bu çalışmaların ana dinamiği, örgütleyicisi ve yürütücüsü, şüphesiz devletin kendisidir. Ancak bu gücün dışında kalan sivil örgütlerin veya bireylerin buna kayıtsız kaldığı söylenemez. Bunun en somut ve dikkat çekici örneği, 1932 yılında yayımlanmaya başlayan Öz Dilimize Doğru adlı aşırı özleşmeci dil dergisidir. Bu dergi, faaliyete girdiği andan sonuna kadar, devletin resmi tezi olan özleşmeciliği ana sorunu olarak görmüş, desteklemiş ve bu yönde çoğu zaman akıl dışı öneriler ileri sürmüştür. İşte bu makalede söz konusu derginin biçim özelliklerinin yanı sıra yukarıda işaret edilen süreçteki rolü merkeze alınarak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.
