Karkamış'ta Yerleşmenin Tarihsel Gelişiminde Etkili Coğrafi Faktörler ve Antik Karkamış Şehri

Özet
Türkiye-Suriye sınırında, Gaziantep şehrinin yaklaşık 75 km. güneydoğusunda ve Fırat Nehri'nin hemen batı kenarında kalan antik Karkamış şehri, tarihte birçok ulusa ev sahipliği yapmış olması nedeniyle Türkiye'nin önemli arkeolojik alanlarından biridir. Coğrafi konumu ve askeri açıdan sahip olduğu avantajlar nedeniyle tarih boyunca Hitit, Asur, Babil, Pers, Roma, Bizans ve Osmanlı gibi büyük devlet ve imparatorlukların önemli şehirlerinden biri olmuştur. Yapılan araştırmalara göre antik Karkamış şehrinin Hititler dönemimde otuz bin civarında nüfusa sahip olduğu düşünülmektedir. M.Ö 1. bin yılda nüfusu otuz bin civarında olduğu tahmin edilen Karkamış yerleşmenin 2000 yılındaki toplam nüfusu 4.412'dir. Şehrin 2010 yılına ait adrese dayalı nüfusu ise 2.998 kişidir. Tarihi zenginliği, idari fonksiyonları, sınır ticareti avantajı, demir ve karayolu ulaşımının kolaylığı yanında yakın çevresinde suyun ve verimli tarım arazilerinin bulunduğu yerleşmenin giderek nüfus kaybetmesi, kentsel gelişimi etkileyen farklı faktörlerin araştırılmasını zorunlu kılmaktadır. Nitekim bu çalışma, Karkamış'ta antik şehir ve günümüz yerleşmesinin gelişimi ile kurulduğu arazinin yapısı, iklim özellikleri, coğrafi konumu, sosyo-ekonomik kullanım özelliği gibi coğrafi faktörlerin yeniden değerlendirilmesi ve yerleşmenin stratejik, ekonomik, nüfus ve ticari gerilemesinin coğrafi nedenlerini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.
Abstract
The city of Carchemish, which was located on the border of Turkey-Syria, about 75 km-Southeast of Gaziantep city and on the west of the Euphrates river was one of the Turkey's most important archaeological sites. In addition to its geographical situation, it has been home to many of the nations at that time. Because of its advantages in terms of geographical location and the military, city of Carchemish has been one of the most important cities of the Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians Persians, Romans, Byzantine and Ottoman like large states and empires throughouthistory. According to the surveys, its population is thought to be around thirtythousand in the time of the Hittite. While the estimated population of the city ofCarchemish was about to be thirty thousand BC 1 thousand years, its totalpopulation was 4.412 in 2000 and 2.998 in 2010. The city, which has historicalrichness, administrative functions, the advantage of cross-border trade, easiness ofrail and bus transportation and closeness to water and productive agricultural lands,are losing its population and thereby, it is a necessity to be find out the underlyingfactors affecting the urbanization process. Indeed, in this study, it is aimed to reevaluationthe with the development of the city of Carchemish and the structure ofland where the city was established, re-evaluate the geographical location and socioeconomicuses like properties of the city, and finally to explore the causes of thecity's strategic, economic, demographic and commercial regression.
