Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the mask acanthus motif seen in Theodosius II (408-450) era of Byzantine Anatolia. The acanthus motif which had various regional types became a preferred ornamental motif in architecture especially in capitals. The mask acanthus motif which was investigated in this study was the most widely used type of acanthus motif in Anatolia. In this context, it would be appropriate to say that the mask acanthus motif has an Anatolian origin. There are many marble quarries dating back to the Theodosius II era, close to the capital Constantinople. The semi processed capitals which were produced in these marble quarries were shipped to the different remote places of the state. The mask acanthus motif was the most preferred motif in the semi-processed capitals of the era. There is a reason for this. The mask acanthus motif which was processed through a template with a mechanical effect provided easiness for mass production. Therefore, it became a preferred ornamental motif for the intensive construction facilities of Theodosius II era. The mask acanthus motif was widely preferred in Corinthian and composite types of column capitals. In this study; the mask acanthus motif was evaluated through different samples in accordance with its origin and usage areas in architecture.
