Abstract

The importance of French literature in modern Turkish literature is indisputable. In this framework, French poetry, although it has a powerful tradition, influenced Turkish poetry, especially the modern period, to a great extent: many Turkish poets were nourished by the great 19th century French poetry tradition and this produced works whose originality was undeniable; at this point, no matter how powerful being influenced/being inspired is, it is obvious that the poetry environment that the poet developed in contributed to the creation of originality in the poet’s genius. As in other domains, in music and in art, Yahya Kemal was the first to turn the East- West comparison into a synthesis in poetry and created an example that provided the opportunity for a distinct newness. Besides the connection between Western sources and our modern poetry, it is also necessary to show the link between Eastern sources Divan poetry and folk poetry. At this point there is another matter that needs to be emphasized, which is that there was a different influence exerted on every generation of our local or national poetry tradition and that every generation assimilated this effect and transformed it into a new original work.
