Abstract
It is a certain that Orhan Veli and his poems paved the way for a change in direction in our literature and was one of our most popular poets for a half a century. Veli became interested in French literature as a child and translated a good deal of poetry and prose from French. On the other hand, Jacques Prévert also earned the title of France’s most popular poet, was translated into various languages, was well-known around the world, including Turkey. A comparison of the poems of Orhan Veli and Jacques Prévert, will reveal a lot of similarities between them especially regarding their world view and their understanding of poetry. For Orhan Veli to have been influenced by Prévert seems to be chronologically impossible. Nevertheless, this similarity must have an explanation. In our opinion, paying close attention to the historical- social contexts both poets occupied, their sources of inspiration and close sense of humor, will lead us to sufficient explanatory proof .
