Abstract

This essay, conceived in the framework of the concept of literary freedom, being itself derived from general freedom guaranteed by the international law, attempts to analysie two novels by Elif fiafak, Pinhan, Baba ve Piç. Habitually transforming the tradition of heterodox Islam in Anatolia into literary discourse, Safak, brings together in Pinhan, history and fiction and constructs an original romanesque universe where one discovers a perfect mastery of style, notably at the level of creating the characters and spatial description; nevertheless, in spite of her fierce opposition to accepted ideas and set attitudes, she cannot avoid the contradiction when she herself condemns heterodox Islam in Anatolia. As for Baba ve Piç, it is a novel of women who question their feminine identity through the traumatizing story of the deportation of the Armenians in 1915; rich in intrigue, action, organization, rigorous composition and polyphonic structure, the novel is written through a profoundly human perspective. Nevertheless, the criticism that Safak formulates within the framework, of the emancipation of women against Turkish modernization is largely unfounded.
